Emmy Fever

The 2012 Emmy Awards Red Carpet was sparkling last night with an array of shimmering, twinkling gowns.  For me, the glittering dresses stole the show in the style stakes, followed closely by the girls in various shades of blue. My absolute favourites however, went for both.  Here’s a few of my faves, and a couple who I feel missed the mark!

Nicole Kidman

Nicole looked as sleek and impeccable as always in this Antonio Berardi embellished column dress. The statuesque actress described the dress as ‘comfortable,’ and complimented it perfectly with Fred Leighton jewellery.

Sofia Vergara

The sexy Latina was one of my absolute favourites in this sequinned, mermaid-esque teal dress by Zuhair Murad. Despite the dress splitting and revealing her fabulous bum (pic of said bum malfunction can be found on her Twitter page), the dress perfectly accentuated her amazing curves, and I can’t fault her choice of accessories.

Julianne Hough

Julianne looked stunning in another mermaid inspired gown in an aqua hue by Georges Hobeika. I really love the velvet petal detailing as it sweeps down to the floor. The look has a modern, fresh feel with a touch of Old Hollywood glamour, and her chunky earrings, white clutch and side-swept up-do complete the outfit perfectly.

Kerry Washington

The actress was a shimmering delight in Vivienne Westwood. She is always one to watch on the red carpet, and she didn’t disappoint this time – the gown worked perfectly with her skin tone, and she was right to keep the accessories simple and let the dress take all the focus.

Ginnifer Goodwin

Ginnifer channelled her inner vintage goddess in this exquisite Monique L’Huillier embroidered gown. She teamed the dress with matching Christian Louboutins and understated accessories. Monique L’huillier is gaining in red carpet popularity, and it’s not hard to see why – this dress looks comfortable and effortlessly stylish.

Claire Danes

I’m a big Homeland fan and am really pleased that she scooped an award, but I doubt she’ll getting any accolades for this boring, unflattering yellow Lanvin dress. She said she picked it because it was ‘easy’, and I know it must be hard to pick something fabulous when you have to dress a baby bump, but it can’t be that difficult to not make it look like a giant lemon. Sorry Claire!

Lena Dunham

I sort of get the basic thinking behind picking this dress. On paper, it’s very feminine, young, lace dresses can look very classy…but this Prada creation is just a frumpy monstrosity on her. She looks obese, which she definitely is not. An absolute fail in my eyes.

Heidi Klum

You might think me saying I’m not sure about this outfit is down to jealousy…and maybe you’d be right. However, even though I think she looks absolutely uh-MAZING, her body is pure perfection as we already know, (and who doesn’t want to show off how incredible they look after a break-up?) I’m just not sure it’s appropriate for the event. Call me a prude, but I’ve never been overly keen on too much skin on the red carpet.

Do you agree? Let me know…

Kanye West Not In Paris, Not Going Gorillas

A spokesperson for Kanye West’s label DW has confirmed he will no longer be showing his latest collection at Paris Fashion Week. I wonder if this is something to do with the fact that Kanye’s time has been monopolised by reality television and home movie ‘superstar’ Kim Kardashian, or possibly because the collection has been met by lukewarm reviews in the past. He has failed to set the fashion world alight, and I think it’s probably for the best to cut his losses and not show for a third season. However, ‘Kimye’ are rumoured to be considering a joint shoe line, before you breathe a sigh of relief.

This Is Fashion Related, I Promise…

David Gandy is a fashion model, and therefore this picture is in no way gratuitous, nor is it linked to me needing something to distract me from this hangover. Honest.

This Week I’m Loving…

The celebrity looks I’ve been drooling over this week…

Kelly Osbourne

I can’t help it. I love it. I tried to hate it. Kelly Osbourne wore a bright colour blocking outfit at NYFW teamed with nude peep-toes, a houndstooth clutch and a tall top knot do. Love! I can’t admit to being a massive Kelly fan, but you’ve got to hand it to her for how far she’s come in the style stakes.

Victoria Beckham

From one extreme to the other as Queen VB keeps it chic and simple as always in New York. She looks effortlessly stylish in a silk blouse and high-waisted black trousers, carrying a bag from her own collection and finishing the look with a pair of Manolos. White blouse with a one-year-old? She’s brave…

Harry Styles

Harry. It feel so wrong, but he looks absolutely delicious here at Burberry for London Fashion Week, and as comfortable and cool as someone who has been in the public eye for years. Plus I’m still nearly a decade younger than Caroline Flack, so that makes it feel slightly less creepy.

Dita Von Teese

Vintage queen Dita Von Teese manages to be both completely on trend and exquisitely classic in a velvet peplum dress with a black fascinator. I have seen some criticism of this ensemble, but I honestly can’t understand it, I think it’s pure Dita – sexy yet sophisticated 40s siren.

Eva Longoria

Eva gets it 100% right at the 2012 ALMA awards, opting for the perfect sexiness to covered up ratio with sheer panels and a seductive slit. I adore the beaded detail and the Tom Ford heels compliment the outfit perfectly. Muy Caliente!

Fashionista Of The Day: Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks is a rapper, singer and songwriter from Harlem, New York.  She’s been recording for a few years but her single 212, released at the beginning of the year, really put her on the map in terms of both music and fashion.

A lot of the fashionistas I feature catch my eye because their look is so polished and together that it takes commitment and effort to maintain, which is commendable. But there’s something about Azealia’s style that’s just so carefree – she says herself that she ‘wears a lot of clothes that are going to get dirty and look cool once they get dirty’. Don’t get me wrong, she scrubs up really well and can look fabulous and polished when she wants to, but she doesn’t feel the need to all the time, which is really refreshing. I think you know you’ve really made it as a recognised fashionista when you can roll out of your house in an outfit you could have easily been wearing in bed with only a cute bag and trendy sunglasses to accessorize and people admire your effortlessly cool ensemble.

Today the 21 year old rapper is in Milan opening the new Just Cavalli flagship store, having already been selected by Alexander Wang as the face of his latest collection, so it’s safe to say the fashion world are sitting up and taking notice of this budding fashion icon.

If you’ve seen the 212 video, you’ll know she looks cool and casual, with a Mickey Mouse jumper, cutoffs and her hair in pigtails. It’s an adorable, simple concept which looks like she’s thrown on anything and got one of her friends that owns a video camera to film her rapping in front of a wall. Fast forward to the video for Van Vogue, and she’s transformed into a sexy, high fashion vixen, cavorting in a shallow swimming pool and wearing some uh-mazing outfits. It just goes to show she can pull off any look with ease, and that kind of versatility is going to serve her well in her musical career as well as in the style stakes. She’s a fresh and exciting new talent, not afraid to take risks and do what she feels is right, and that’s apparent in her eclectic fashion sense. I’m looking forward to her look evolving and growing, and expecting big things from her musically.

White Stilettos – Cheap Or Chic?

A few years ago, it wouldn’t have even been up for discussion. I’m not sure exactly why, but for me they’ve always exuded a kind of cheapness and vulgarity (OK maybe not always, I did have some white stiletto cowboy boots back in the day but I’m pretty sure I’ve destroyed all photographic evidence so we’re just going to breeze past that), and are synonymous with hilarious 80s tack. But apparently, TOWIE has to answer for the recent spike in their popularity, as they do so many things. What’s your verdict? Are they So Right or Lady Of The Night? Let me know…

They’ve got some explaining to do…

Looking Good, Baby

This week, singer Adele announced she is expecting her first child. Being very private and unconcerned with the celebrity lifestyle, my bet is she’s not going to be one for tottering around in 6 inch heels at 8 months like some famous expectant mothers. Some think it’s a time for embracing comfort, while others feel that they shouldn’t have to abandon their own style or wardrobe for the best part of a year. Either way, being pregnant can definitely throw a bump shaped spanner in the works for even the most stylish ladies when it comes to picking an outfit. I would like to say that even though I’m about to cruelly judge the maternity wardrobes of celebrities, it’s a truly magical time, all pregnant women are beautiful, blah blah blah…

Kourtney Kardashian

Still no baby for Kourtney? Looks like she’s following in the footsteps of Jessica ‘doesn’t it seem like I’ve been pregnant for about two years’ Simpson. She seems ready to pop any moment, but still looks effortlessly chic. A lot of her pregnancy outfit choices have been minimalistic, favouring simple maxis and floaty dresses, but she has always looked radiant and comfortable, which is quite a feat.

Aah, Snooki. Many thought that when the notorious party girl announced she was knocked up, she might tone down her garish outfits and hang up her towering stilettos. Many were wrong. The high hemlines, plunging necklines and abundance of animal prints show no signs of disappearing. Snooki has pledged to dramatically scale back her partying to a more moderate level, which is the most important change after all.

Kristin Cavallari

I’m not a huge fan of Kristin Cavallari, in fact I actively disliked her on The Hills, but I have always admired her style and her choice of maternity wear is no exception. Her look is perhaps a little more relaxed and she appears to be wearing more flats than usual, but she’s still looking impeccably put together.

Uma Thurman

Uma Thurman definitely falls into the ‘comfort’ category. My, she looks comfy. Perhaps a little too comfy to be outside, but hey, as we all know half the fun of pregnancy is you can do whatever the hell you feel like all the time. I suppose that includes crimes against fashion, but don’t push your luck Uma.

Sienna Miller

And at completely the other end of the spectrum, we have Sienna Miller. I think we could all anticipate that Sienna would be rocking highly fashionable maternity wear, and she seems to have found an elegant balance between comfort and style, while of course staying true to her trademark boho-babe look.
